ISMPP Launches the 2026 GenAI in Practice Survey
A year can be a long time in generative AI.
In September 2025, ISMPP members participated in the first GenAI in Practice Survey, helping establish a benchmark for how generative AI was being adopted and applied across medical communications and publications. The survey explored not only members’ experience with AI, but also where they were using it, the barriers they encountered, how prepared their organizations were to support its use, and what they wanted to learn next.
Now it is time to see what has changed.
The 2026 GenAI in Practice Survey of ISMPP Members, developed by members of the ISMPP AI Task Force, returns to many of the same questions asked one year ago. That continuity is intentional. By revisiting the original measures, ISMPP can begin to look beyond a snapshot of AI adoption and examine how our profession is evolving over time.
From Benchmark to Change Over Time
Generative AI tools and capabilities have continued to advance rapidly over the past year. At the same time, organizations have been developing policies, training programs, governance approaches, and new ways of incorporating AI into professional workflows.
The 2026 survey will help us explore whether those developments are translating into changes in practice.
Are members becoming more experienced and confident AI users? Are applications expanding beyond writing and editing into strategy, research, data analysis, creative applications, and workflow automation? Are organizational policies and training keeping pace? Which barriers remain? And how are attitudes toward the opportunities—and potential risks—of AI changing?
The survey also explores how members are incorporating AI into their workflows, including one-off prompting, conversational use, custom assistants and agents, AI embedded within software, and agentic workflows.
Every Perspective Helps Build the Picture
The survey is open to all ISMPP members, whether or not you participated in the 2025 survey.
And you do not need to be an AI expert or frequent user to contribute. Understanding limited use—or no use at all—is just as important to an accurate picture of adoption as understanding the experiences of advanced users. Perspectives from across professional environments, roles, and career stages will help us better understand where the profession stands today.

- Identify emerging use cases, opportunities, and persistent barriers
- Understand how organizational governance, training, and AI policies are maturing

Survey invitations are being distributed to ISMPP members via SurveyMonkey. Look for the invitation in the email account associated with your ISMPP membership.
